Flamer kit install....bit of a disappointment!

After finding a free day, with good weather, I was encouraged by my friend Adam, that it was a good time to install the flamer kit.

We starter off by having to jack the car on stands to get access to the exhaust flange, after the sports cat. We removed the back box holding supports from the rubber supports so that the back box was free to be lowered. We then slacken the exhaust bolts and the exhaust slowly dropped to the floor, allowing us room to drill the 14mm hole in the exhaust back box.

We then opened the boot and pushed the HT lead from the ignition coil through a spare grommet in the boot space, beneath the spare wheel.
This then connects to the top of the spark plug as shown, above.

The ignition coil was fitted and cable tied in place beside the spare wheel in the boot. One of the wires was connected to an earth point on the chassis, and the other was run forward to the switch which was mounted on the ash tray. The other side of the switch was connected to a 12v source on the cigarette lighter lamp.

Things went wrong at first as I connected the 12v source for the coil to the constant source on the cigarette lighter. This worked, however after a couple of tests running the kit, it blew a fuse. After some head scratching, I removed some electrical tape to discover that the electronic boost controller had been soldered onto this supply. So when I added the flamer kit, it was too much current for the stem and blew the fuse, in the box just beneath the steering wheel. One 20Amp fuse later, the flamer kit was disconnected and I started looking for another source. This is when I used the lamp for the cigarette lighter. The only down side of this is that it only gets a 12v supply when the car lights are ON. So, you have to switch on the sidelights, before activating the flamer. No big problem really!

Above picture showing the HT lead passing through the boot grommet. This exits just behind the bumper and drops down to the exhaust.

Power supply fitted...no more lamp! The other (negative) side was just taped off.

After testing, I did get a small flame....more like a sparking flash in the exhaust when run with anti lag, however, in order to fully flame, it needs to have a decay fitted, as per the instructions. So perhaps its time for that in the future!
