Since I last mentioned it, the Type R has been sat in storage without moving an inch. However, since the Ecu is totally stock with the Japanese map, its set to run on 100 Ron octane fuel, which we can't get here in N.Ireland. I was looking at a few options and wanted to map the ECU myself, but the V5, V6 ECU is notoriously difficult to access.
I managed to use my Evoscan cable and connect for datalogging, but its impossible to access the map for download.
Basically everyone suggests ECUTEK as this is the easiest way to map an ECU of this type. After a few calls, both to ECUTEK and various well know mappers, they could map it for me but ECUTEK actually locks out the ecu, so only a dealer is able to have access as they install a digital license. They won't even let the car owner access it after its mapped!
I then thought of ECULABS, and they have the same results as ECUTEK, but a lot cheaper. The main issue I don't like is that both these types overwrite both the map, and the rom/ecu source code and I wanted to keep the original ECU stock, just like the car.
I then found the Apexi Power FC.
This is a totally stand alone engine management system and you can live tune the car on the road through the hand commander. PERFECT. It also means I can remove and store the original ECU, for the future.
I have included a link to the Apexi, on the site I bought it from. Its still cheaper to import it myself from Japan and pay customs postal charges than it is from UK dealers!
I have looked on all the forums and also a lot of the usual tuner part sites and breakers and used units were selling for not much less that new units. The Apexi is very hard to get and the parent company, Apex has recently gone into bankruptcy, with some models now being discontinued. Its fair enough as most of the models it was produced for are all 15yrs old now and hitting classic status. I decided I might as well pick up a new unit while I can, as I plan to keep the car until retirement anyway!!
Im going to give the car a good tune, but basically make it safe for UK fuel, to reduce knock and make its safe for any driving style. Basically the JDM cars run an aggressive timing map and slightly rich, so that a a good starting part. Ill reduce timing a bit and add some fuel at top end as a safety measure. Of course this is the plan for the map, it all depends on the results from the wideband at the end of the day!
Im sure it will take at least a month for it to arrive, so stay tuned!
